Today was THE BIG DAY! It was the culmination of over 30 years of dreaming about sailing away from San Diego, on a boat that is truly meant to be a blue water cruiser. Brent seemed to be on a cloud as the crew boarded the boat and we waved goodbye to our friends and family at the dock. The trip from the Chula Vista Marina to the fuel dock in Harbor Island took about 2 hours of motoring. We all exhibited a bit of melancholy as we realized it would be the last time passing under the Coronado Bridge and enjoying the downtown skyline on the boat for many years.

We pulled up to the fuel dock and filled up the tanks and extra 5 gal. cans that are stored on the deck. With the recent surge in fuel costs, the tab was higher than we expected – $700 for 140 gal. of diesel. After we were topped-off, we shoved-off for the Bali Hai dock, where Beth, Kyle and Alyssa would get off the boat. It’s only a 10 min. trip from dock to dock.

Emotions were flowing as we all hugged Brent, Jimmy and Marnie goodbye. We know that Brent is finally realizing his dream, but that didn’t make it easier to be happy about seeing them go.

We untied the lines from the bow and stern and watched Steel Away motor away toward the entrance of the bay. We prayed that Neptune will watch over and protect this small crew of brave voyagers, as they sail toward a new adventure and an exciting new chapter.

      Hi Dave!

We just arrived at Fakarava in the Tuomatus this morning (now @ 11:00AM your time). I will try to give you a loose itinerary. Are you guys seeing Brent’s frequent blog postings on the Where Are We- Predict Wind page?
Look for an article in Latitude 38 that Jimmy Peter wrote about converting from racing sailor to cruising sailor. It’s titled Crewed Listing Scores a Pacific Crossing. There is a photo of Brent when they arrived at Nuku-Hiva.
