Beth Arrives in the Marquesas

Lengthy air travel is never a fun thing. My flights and layovers to the Marquesas Islands were 26 hours and consisted of 4 flights. Needless to say, I was very happy to arrive on Nuku-Hiva and have the smiling faces of Marnie and Brent waiting for me. They had rented a car for the day to pick me up and we set out on a beautiful tour of the island.  The most surprising ... Read More

Land Ho!

The Pacific crossing started out cold from San Diego. It gradually warmed up over the course of a little more than a week. Early in the voyage, several large fish bit on the line, but were lost early in the process. Of course, the fish story was that they were HUGE! Eventually, one Skip Jack Tuna was caught and that fed the crew for several days.  As the temps increased, so did the ... Read More

Steel Away Casts-off from San Diego!

Today was THE BIG DAY! It was the culmination of over 30 years of dreaming about sailing away from San Diego, on a boat that is truly meant to be a blue water cruiser. Brent seemed to be on a cloud as the crew boarded the boat and we waved goodbye to our friends and family at the dock. The trip from the Chula Vista Marina to the fuel dock in Harbor Island took ... Observations of Catalina: Day 20

After 3 weeks on the boat in Catalina, I feel conflicting things. Yes, it still feels like we’re on a wonderful vacation, but I’m honestly a little bored with being at the Isthmus, which is the more remote part of the island. We’ve hiked, snorkeled, dived and moved to 4 different bays. We figured out how to use our small dinghy as a dive boat and also as a sailboat. We’ve tried everything on ... Read More

Shakedown Cruise – Sailing to Catalina: Day 1

Big day! Today is the day that Steel Away finally left San Diego for the first time in 29 years! We left the Chula Vista Marina a few minutes after 5 PM and headed to the fuel dock in Harbor Island to top off our tank. We are headed to Catalina for approximately 4 weeks to do a shakedown of the boat. We plan on trying to test absolutely everything we can think of. ... Read More

Steel Away is Rechristened During the Pandemic!

An epic event - the boat just splashed a few days ago on 6-26-20! Renaming the boat from Party Central to Steel Away was met with a lot more resistance than you might imagine. Brent wanted the old name to be kept, even though the boat is basically new inside, and out. Shouldn’t she have a new name, more fitting of her giant makeover? I have never forgotten the stories Brent told of the ... Read More
